America rejects any targeting of SistaniShafaq News/ On Thursday, the US Ambassador to Baghdad, Elena Romansky, expressed her rejection of any targeting of the highest Shiite religious authority in Iraq, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.

“His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Sistani is a prominent religious figure who is respected by the international community and is a decisive and influential voice in maintaining peace in the region,” Romansky wrote in a post on the X platform.

She added, “We reject any targeting of His Eminence,” noting that “the United States continues to support efforts aimed at promoting peace in the region.”

On Tuesday evening, the right-wing Israeli Channel 14 published a photo of the highest religious authority in Iraq, Ali al-Sistani, as part of a list of potential assassination targets.

Sistani’s photo appeared alongside regional leaders such as Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, Hezbollah deputy secretary-general Naim Qassem, Hamas political bureau chief Yahya Sinwar, Iranian Quds Force commander Esmail Qaani, and Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

A “target” sign was placed over their heads without explaining the reasons for Sistani’s inclusion, which sparked angry reactions in Iraq. The pictures were shown while the reporter was talking about the possible “Israeli” response to the recent Iranian missile attack.

The Iraqi government and the presidency expressed their strong rejection, yesterday, Wednesday, of the insult to the highest religious authority for Shiites in the country, represented by Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, by Israeli media outlets, calling on the international community to denounce attempts to undermine figures of influence and global respect.
