Embassy of the United States announced on Thursday that the US Agency for International Development [USAID] will contribute up to $ 3 million US dollars in aid , technical and financial formula for the Iraqi government to support holding Iraqi legislative elections in 2018.
“The agency will involve Iraqi civil society partners and local organizations to support election monitoring, voter registration and outreach to marginalized groups,” the statement said.
“The existence of a unified federal democratic Iraq is important to achieve peace and prosperity in the region and will ensure US assistance to hear and count all Iraqi votes through peaceful and transparent elections to be held in a timely manner in accordance with the Iraqi constitution.”
“We urge all parties to work together to push forward the political process in ways that promote the interests and aspirations of the Iraqi people as a whole,” US Ambassador Douglas Seelman said.
“US assistance will ensure greater transparency by helping Iraqi civil society partners monitor election procedures in the provinces before the election day and deploy several thousand trained monitors to oversee polling stations in selected governorates,” the statement said.
“The US Agency for International Development (USAID) will help local organizations register voters and encourage marginalized groups, including minorities and the three million displaced people, to participate,” he said.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) expects to start working with the Iraqi government in December 2017 to support the upcoming elections, noting that “supporting Iraqi democratic institutions is one of the key ingredients of the United States’ continued commitment to work for a prosperous and united federal federal Iraq.”
