On Monday, the spokesman for the Victory Coalition, Salam al-Zubaidi, explained the reasons that prevented the legislation of the Popular Mobilization Forces Law at the present time, noting that the US administration threatened to impose sanctions in exchange for passing this law.
Al-Zubaidi told Al-Maalomah, “Unfortunately, Iraq has mortgaged its economy and finances to the US side through the Federal Reserve, which has made the government and parliament fear the imposition of US sanctions on the country.”
He added, “The United States has threatened to impose sanctions on Iraq if Parliament proceeds with legislating the Popular Mobilization Forces Law. The Parliament Speaker confirmed this threat in a televised interview, acknowledging that the US side informed its first deputy directly, threatening to impose sanctions if the law is passed.”
He explained that “Iraq is approaching elections and cannot be subjected to sanctions that it is absolutely unable to bear, especially in light of the current situation in the country, despite the fact that the Popular Mobilization Law represents a purely internal affair and cannot be interfered with from the outside. It is unacceptable for the United States to exert pressure or dictates on this issue, as it is an Iraqi law par excellence.”
