Former head of the parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee, Furat al-Tamimi, called on Friday for urgent action to adopt key tools to combat the escalating drought in Iraq.
Al-Tamimi told Al-Maalouma, “The drought map is currently affecting between 75 and 80 percent of Iraq’s area, and its severity is directly concentrated in the southern and central Euphrates governorates.” He pointed out that “more than 90 areas have entered the red zone due to the repercussions of the drought, which has reached the point of being unable to secure raw water for desalination plants, which has prompted the authorities to take water rationing measures between regions to provide a minimum level of drinking water.”
He added, “This reality necessitates a shift to the most important tools for combating drought: desalination projects, particularly well water with high salt concentrations in the south and central Euphrates, all the way to the eastern governorates, including Diyala, as a strategic option for securing a minimum level of water.”
Al-Tamimi stressed that “desalination has become an essential solution to overcome the drought crisis, which will not be temporary, and its repercussions will be more severe over the next ten years, according to international studies and readings.”
