Representative Salah Al-Tamimi called on Saturday for the adoption of five main points to address the drought crisis facing Iraq, warning that the crisis is not immediate and could turn into a greater disaster if urgent measures are not taken.
Al-Tamimi said in a statement to Al-Maalouma, “The drought crisis requires radical reforms in the institutions responsible for managing the water sector, as well as changing traditional irrigation methods in fields and orchards and relying on modern technologies.”
He added, “The proposed strategy focuses on reducing water waste, raising community awareness of the importance of water, ensuring fair distribution among governorates, addressing sources of pollution, and moving towards desalinating seawater to save governorates from salt tides and water pollution.”
Al-Tamimi stressed that “the water issue should be treated as a national security issue,” stressing the need to accelerate practical steps to ensure the continuity of citizens’ lives and the sustainability of water resources.
