Member of the Parliamentary Energy Committee, MP Suhaila Al-Sultani, confirmed on Monday that the upcoming vote during today’s parliamentary session on the draft law regulating renewable energy will represent a qualitative step towards achieving self-sufficiency in electricity production. It will also contribute to a major economic transformation and create broad opportunities in the labor market.
Al-Sultani said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “Parliament is scheduled to vote today on the draft law regulating renewable energy, which is one of the vital and important laws, especially in the context of addressing the chronic crisis in the electricity sector.” She stressed that “the law will be smoothly passed due to its importance and the fact that it does not fall within the category of controversial laws.”
She added that “the enactment of the law will contribute to reducing Iraq’s dependence on imported electricity and gas, which will save large sums of money spent annually in this framework.” She pointed out that “Iraq enjoys an abundance of renewable energy sources, especially solar energy, as sunlight hours reach 12 to 14 hours per day during the summer, and about 10 hours in the winter, in addition to the availability of wind energy.”
Al-Sultani explained that “the shift to renewable energy will not only radically address the electricity crisis, but will also transform Iraq from an energy importer to an energy exporter.”
It’s worth noting that the House of Representatives’ agenda for today’s session included a vote on the draft law regulating renewable energy, submitted by the Electricity and Energy Committee.
