The Reconstruction and Development Bloc, headed by the Prime Minister, is holding a meeting with the House of Representatives Presidency to discuss the circumstances surrounding the clashes and disagreements within Parliament.
The bloc’s spokesman, Firas Al-Maslamawi, told Shafaq News Agency, “The bloc’s presidency, which includes five MPs, including Jabbar Al-Kanani, Mohammed Al-Sayhoud, Kazem Al-Tawki, and Murtada Al-Saadi, held a closed-door meeting with the parliament’s presidency to determine the circumstances of the verbal altercations that occurred today inside parliament, which affected the session.”
He added, “What happened today is a precedent for which the Parliament’s Presidency bears collective responsibility, as there are internal regulations and laws for the House of Representatives that govern the presidency and members of the legislative body, which is the highest legislative authority. Therefore, we, as a bloc, support solutions and finding the right ways to hold sessions and pass important laws.”
“Therefore, the leadership of our bloc is working seriously and is currently meeting with the parliament leadership to determine the truth of what happened and its causes, because the stories that have been told about this are many. As a result, the legislative institution is not for a specific group, person or party, but rather it is an institution elected by the Iraqi people, and therefore its continued work is necessary. We stress the continuation of holding sessions and strengthening the passage of important laws.”
He continued, “We are working to find solutions, and we must be responsible and continue to hold parliamentary sessions and pass important laws.”
A source had previously reported that Sunni bloc representatives would meet tonight to issue a position on the disagreement between the Speaker of Parliament and his deputy .
The source told Shafaq News Agency, “The Sunni blocs’ representatives will meet tonight to issue a position on the events that took place inside the Speaker of Parliament’s office .”
He added, “The incident stemmed from a verbal altercation over the phone between Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani and his deputy, Mohsen al-Mandalawi. The latter arrived at al-Mashhadani’s office to continue the argument over statements regarding the Popular Mobilization Forces retirement law and other issues .”
He continued, “Al-Mandlawi objected to Al-Mashhadani’s statements regarding the Arab League, and the latter responded by saying that Iraq is older than the Arab League. It is seven thousand years old, and it is unreasonable for it to take its identity from an institution that is years old .”
He pointed out that “regarding the meeting, the Sunni political blocs will support Al-Mashhadani, as they consider the position the pinnacle of the Sunni component at the political level .”
Earlier on Monday, a parliamentary source revealed that a verbal altercation broke out inside the House of Representatives between Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, First Deputy Speaker Mohsen al-Mandalawi, and a number of Coordination Framework MPs, leading to the postponement of today’s session .
The source told Shafaq News Agency that the dispute erupted over Al-Mashhadani’s recent statements regarding the political process and elections .
Prior to that, al-Mashhadani said in a televised interview on Dijlah TV that Iraq was set to witness demonstrations next month, and that we might resort to an “emergency government” if security turmoil occurred in Iraq. He also confirmed that the US had sent messages to all political leaders regarding the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), indicating that the US approach was to integrate the PMF into the security forces, not restructure it .
