A government source in Nineveh Governorate reported on Tuesday that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani will visit Mosul tomorrow, Wednesday, on an official visit aimed at inaugurating several strategic projects in the governorate, most notably Mosul International Airport.

The source told Shafaq News Agency, “Al-Sudani will arrive in Mosul tomorrow morning, Wednesday, at the head of a high-level government delegation that includes a number of ministers, to participate in the opening ceremony of vital projects in the city.”

He pointed out that “the visit will include the opening of Mosul Airport after its rehabilitation is completed according to the highest technical specifications, in addition to the opening of the Ramada Tourist Hotel, and the opening of a number of other service projects in the city center.”

The source explained that the visit’s agenda also includes “laying the foundation stone for an investment power station south of Mosul, in addition to launching work and laying the foundation stone at an oil field within the governorate’s borders.”

He added, “A number of ministers and government officials arrived in Mosul today, Tuesday, in preparation for the opening ceremony at Mosul Airport and to receive the Prime Minister during his upcoming visit.”

Nineveh Governor Abdul Qadir al-Dakhil announced, in early May, the landing of the first experimental Iraqi Airways aircraft at Mosul International Airport.

It’s worth noting that the Mosul International Airport project saw a resurgence in 2023 due to the destruction it suffered during ISIS’s control of Mosul. Funding for the project was provided through the local government budget of Nineveh Governorate, and in direct cooperation with several government agencies, including the Ministries of Transport and Interior, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Border Ports Authority.

An informed source revealed last Saturday evening that Mosul International Airport will open at the end of this week, in the presence of Federal Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. The visit is expected to include the inauguration of the al-Nuri Mosque and its iconic leaning minaret.
