Shafaq News/ Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced on Saturday that unemployment rates have fallen to 13 percent in the country, stressing his government’s commitment to supporting locally manufactured goods in Iraq.
This came during the inauguration of the factories of the United Arab Food Industries Company Limited, located in the Mahmoudiyah district, south of Baghdad, on the international highway.
The first completed phase includes the pasta and noodle factories, which were built on an area representing (20%) of the total area of (123) dunums, while the total investment volume amounted to (128) billion dinars.
The company plans to increase its workforce to more than 1,000. It is targeting the local market for its production and is also considering export opportunities to a number of neighboring countries.
Al-Sudani said in a speech during the opening of the factories that the private sector contributes to solving the problems of society, including combating unemployment, indicating that “the unemployment rate decreased to (13%) after the expansion of the private sector’s work, especially after the approval of the retirement and social security law, which equalized the privileges of workers in the private sector and the government sector.”
He emphasized ongoing efforts to address laws and regulations that may hinder the private sector’s operations, adding, “Private sector representatives are present at all Ministerial Economic Council meetings and participate in proposals and decision-making.”
Al-Sudani also pointed out that the private sector needs the state’s assistance in completing the infrastructure in order to launch projects, stressing that the government is committed to supporting goods manufactured inside Iraq with 18% of the product’s value in order to export it abroad.
The Prime Minister continued, saying, “Domestic production will generate significant foreign exchange and contribute to employment opportunities.” He emphasized, “The Iraqi industrial sector must be encouraged to play its role in enhancing and developing production, and the government will provide the necessary support.”
