Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani ordered the dismissal of 15 directors-general at the Ministry of Electricity on Sunday, citing delays in collection and monitoring of waste.

Al-Sudani’s media office said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, “Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani chaired a meeting of the Ministry of Electricity’s technical team concerned with collection issues. The meeting was devoted to discussing areas and applications for reducing waste in unreadable electrical energy, reducing the percentage of losses in the national electricity distribution network, and developing collection operations. The meeting was attended by a number of advisors in the Prime Minister’s Office.”

He added, “During the meeting, the ministry’s detailed plan for the next three months was discussed, as were methods for developing the electricity bill payment process, ways to transition to electronic payment, ensuring that all consumer points are monitored and metered, and activating the method of estimating average consumption for cases where meters were not available during the previous period. The file of private companies applying to work in the collection sector across Iraq was also discussed.”

He continued, “The meeting also discussed tariff rates, the importance of cooperation between all state institutions and the Ministry of Electricity, and the provision of information on all government buildings to ensure they are included in the accounting and collection process.”

Al-Sudani directed the dismissal of 15 center managers due to their failure to implement collection instructions and monitor waste. He also directed the Ministry of Electricity to make the issue of inventorying waste and collecting collections a top priority for distribution center and branch managers.

He also directed that “the powers of branch managers at the Ministry of Electricity be increased to enable them to undertake broader and more comprehensive tasks to reduce energy losses, control waste in unreadable consumed capacities, and hold accountable those who fail to achieve these goals, starting with managers of maintenance centers, regions, branches, and other officials in distribution companies.”

The statement indicated that “Al-Sudani also directed the advisory body to study the project to settle the electricity consumption list debts of all subscribers and submit a recommendation on this matter to the Ministerial Council for the Economy.”
