Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced on Monday that Iraq will achieve self-sufficiency in fuel for power plants by 2027, noting that his government has succeeded in maintaining an acceptable level of electricity supply to citizens.
This morning, Al-Sudani launched the implementation work on the project to rehabilitate two existing thermal units with a capacity of 320 megawatts (2 x 160), and install two new units with the same capacity at the Dora Thermal Power Plant in the capital, Baghdad.
Al-Sudani, according to his media office, emphasized the importance of the thermal power plant due to its vital location in central Baghdad, noting that it utilizes the outputs of the Dora refinery within environmental specifications and limitations. He noted that the Ministry of Electricity, through the project to resolve bottlenecks in the transmission and distribution sectors, has maintained an acceptable rate of continuous electricity supply to citizens.
The Prime Minister explained that “the ultimate solution identified by the government since day one of assuming office is to secure fuel and achieve energy independence,” noting that work is underway to secure fuel for all power plants, with the goal of achieving self-sufficiency in gas supply for all operating and new plants by the end of 2027.
Al-Sudani explained that the government has also embarked on promising projects in the field of renewable energy (solar), noting that some of the projects will be operational within less than a year. He praised the efforts of employees of the Ministry of Electricity and national companies for their exceptional work despite the difficult climate conditions.
According to the statement, the project will contribute to strengthening the electrical system on the Karkh side of Baghdad by connecting new and existing units to the 132 kV internal grid, supporting distribution stability and covering part of the increasing loads. The existing units will be rehabilitated according to a timetable that maintains the station’s continuous operation, relying on Dora refinery fuel.
