Shafaq News/ Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani stated on Saturday that all power plants will operate on Iraqi gas by the end of 2027.
In a speech delivered today at a tribal conference, Al-Sudani said, “There is a sense of satisfaction with the government’s work, which has prioritized citizens as a necessity to address the mistakes and policies that led to the delays, by working across various service and economic sectors.”
He pointed to “the steps taken in the field of economic reform, including stopping waste in electricity production and gas flaring, as all stations will operate on Iraqi gas by the end of 2027,” stressing that “Iraq used to spend 6 trillion dinars annually on importing petroleum derivatives, and today we have achieved self-sufficiency.”
Iraq is currently preparing the infrastructure at Khor al-Zubair port in Basra Governorate to import liquefied natural gas, which could take the next three to five months.
It is planned to contract for a floating platform for unloading and storage, and connect it to a 40-kilometer pipeline that will transport the gas by connecting it to the national pipeline near the Shatt al-Basra.
The Iraqi Undersecretary of Oil for Gas Affairs, Izzat Sabir, stated at the end of February that the federal government was studying the possibility of importing gas from Qatar and Algeria after the US president revoked the exemption granted to Iraq to import this material from Iran. Sabir emphasized that the ministry was determined to stop flaring associated gas by 2030.
For many years, Iraq has relied on importing electricity and gas from Iran, especially during the peak summer months. This relies on ongoing US waivers, which are issued multiple times each year.
In October 2024, Iraq signed an agreement with Turkmenistan to import gas in quantities of up to 20 million cubic meters per day via the Iranian pipeline network, using a swap mechanism to facilitate transportation. However, the agreement has not yet begun due to technical issues, the Ministry of Electricity recently announced.
