Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, MP Mohammed Al-Shammari, confirmed on Saturday the difficulty of passing the Khor Abdullah Agreement if it is re-submitted for a vote in the House of Representatives, indicating that the agreement directly affects Iraq’s sovereignty.
Al-Shammari said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “The Federal Court’s decision to annul the Khor Abdullah Agreement came because it was voted on by an absolute majority, which violates the constitution, which requires a two-thirds majority of the members of the House of Representatives to ratify sovereign agreements.”
He added, “The process of demarcating the maritime borders that took place under the agreement witnessed legal violations, most notably the withdrawal of the Indonesian delegation and the absence of the Iraqi delegation during the demarcation sessions in the UN Security Council.”
He continued, “Re-submitting the agreement for a vote again will be extremely difficult, as it affects national sovereignty, in addition to the widespread popular pressure opposing its passage,” noting that “the Iraqi street rejects any infringement of the country’s sovereign rights.”
It is noteworthy that 194 representatives officially signed in support of the Federal Court’s decision to reject the Khor Abdullah Agreement, stressing that the creek is “100% Iraqi” historically and geographically.
