MP Haider Al-Salami revealed, on Tuesday, an important development in the Khor Abdullah issue, reiterating his rejection of the agreement.
Al-Salami said in an interview with Al-Maalouma, “The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has addressed the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers regarding proceeding with the procedures related to depositing the decision of the Federal Supreme Court ruling the unconstitutionality of the Khor Abdullah Agreement,” indicating that “this move came based on our follow-up of this file.”
He added that “the move falls within the framework of the legal space according to Article (46) of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties of 1969, which granted the possibility of invalidating any treaty that violates a fundamental rule of domestic law or the constitution.”
He pointed out that “depositing the decision of the Federal Supreme Court with the United Nations General Assembly represents a prelude to invalidating the Khor Abdullah Agreement, which is far from reality and does not conform with Iraq’s interest and its legitimate and constitutional rights to extend its sovereignty over this strategic waterway.”
