Shafaq News/ The leader of the “United” Party, Atheel Al-Nujaifi, confirmed on Sunday that the role of the United Nations mission in Iraq is “marginal” and serves the strongest party in power, as he put it.
Al-Nujaifi told Shafaq News Agency: “We do not believe that ending the mission of the United Nations mission will negatively affect the Iraqi situation. The role of the United Nations mission was not effective at any time, and it is true that it sometimes succeeded in resolving local crises.”
He added, “This success occurred when the Iraqi parties were searching for a solution, and this happened in the first years of the political process. After that, the role of the United Nations mission was always marginal and often served the stronger party in power.”
The prominent Sunni politician stressed that “reforming the situation in Iraq must be purely Iraqi, and any intervention by another party worsens the situation and does not solve any problem.”
Last Friday, the UN Security Council decided to end the work of the United Nations Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) at the end of 2025, in response to a request submitted by the Iraqi government about two weeks ago.
On Friday, the Iraqi government welcomed Security Council Resolution No. (2734), which was unanimously issued today, ending the mandate and tasks of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq/UNAMI, according to a timetable that ends with complete termination on December 31, 2025.
On May 21, in a letter addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani had officially requested the final end of the mandate of its mission to provide assistance to Iraq, UNAMI, as of December 31, 2025, provided that Its efforts during the remainder of this year will be limited to completing its work only in the files of economic reform, service provision, sustainable development, climate change, and other development aspects.
