MP Mukhtar al-Moussawi confirmed on Saturday that forming the next government will not be easy given the election results, and predicted that negotiations between political forces will be somewhat difficult and complex.
Al-Moussawi told Al-Maalouma that “the Independent High Electoral Commission’s announcement of the preliminary results of the November elections has made the political weight of each party clearer, whether it be the forces within the Coordination Framework or the Sunni, Kurdish, and Turkmen forces.” He noted that “consultations began two days ago, and initial meetings have been held to formulate understandings that will outline a roadmap for the nature of the upcoming alliances that will lead to the formation of the government.”
He added that “forming the next government will not be easy but rather complex, given the disagreements between the political forces, and its formation may require a period of at least five to six months.” He added, however, that “this period could be shortened if the points of contention are addressed and understandings are reached between the influential forces.”
Al-Moussawi indicated that “the selection of the next prime minister will be directly within the purview of the coordinating framework, a point on which there is no disagreement,” explaining that “it is still too early to decide on the candidate, pending the outcome of the ongoing negotiations, especially given that there are several figures currently being considered for the position.”
