MP Mukhtar al-Moussawi called on the Iraqi government on Saturday to announce a clear and explicit position on the recent movements of US forces, after information was received about the transfer of military units from Ain al-Assad base in Anbar province to the city of Erbil.
Al-Moussawi said, in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, that “the continued absence of any official clarification from the government regarding these movements raises many doubts about American intentions, especially in light of the repeated popular and political demands to schedule the withdrawal of those forces from the country.” He stressed that “the government’s silence gives Washington more room to maneuver at the expense of Iraqi sovereignty.”
He pointed out that “the Kurdistan Region is dealing with these movements as if it were a separate entity, far removed from the decisions of the federal government, which further complicates the security and political scenes within the country.” He called on the federal authorities to “take a firm stance that preserves the unity of Iraqi decision-making and prevents any violations that affect national security.”
He added, “The national interest requires that decisions related to the foreign presence be unified and issued solely from Baghdad, far from political calculations and factional interests,” warning that “continued disregard for this issue could lead to serious repercussions for Iraq’s stability and sovereignty.”
