MP Mukhtar al-Moussawi called on Sunday for lifting the US Federal Reserve’s control over Iraqi oil sales, noting that the oil revenue file represents a pressure tactic that has been used repeatedly against Iraq.
Al-Moussawi explained to Al-Maalouma that “the established procedure dictates that the proceeds from Iraqi oil sales are deposited in dollars into accounts at the US Federal Reserve before reaching Baghdad, and this procedure can constitute an economic pressure tactic against Iraq.”
He added that “this matter has direct repercussions on the Iraqi economy and is used as a pressure tactic from time to time. Therefore, this equation must be reconsidered to ensure that Iraq’s oil sales reach Baghdad directly.”
Al-Moussawi pointed out that “the continuation of this procedure causes significant damage to the Iraqi economy and finances, and represents a pressure tactic that can be exploited. This necessitates addressing this framework by the government in a manner that preserves the country’s sovereignty and safeguards its wealth and funds.” He
emphasized that “it is essential for Iraqi oil sales to be directly linked to the state treasury and Iraqi government institutions, which will enhance the government’s ability to manage its financial resources and ensure the protection of national funds and wealth.”
