The Kurdistan Democratic Party member, Haitham Al-Mayahi, confirmed that the return of former Speaker of Parliament Mohammed Al-Halbousi to the presidency of Parliament has become politically and constitutionally closed, noting that overlooking the issue of perjury is no longer acceptable to the majority of influential forces in the parliamentary scene.
Al-Mayahi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “Al-Halbousi will not become Speaker of Parliament again, as breaking the constitutional oath is not a formality or something that can be settled politically,” explaining that “this issue has left a deep impact on the level of trust between the blocs, and it cannot be overlooked.”
He added that “the Coordination Framework, along with the Kurdish forces, will not vote for Halbousi in any session dedicated to electing the Speaker of Parliament,” explaining that “there is an unannounced political consensus to exclude controversial names and move towards a less controversial figure who is capable of managing the next stage.”
Al-Mayahi pointed out that “the door for Al-Halbousi’s return to the presidency of Parliament has been closed permanently, no matter how many regional moves or efforts are made,” stressing that “the file is over politically, and it cannot be reopened even if attempts are made outside the internal framework.”
Al-Mayahi concluded by saying that “political forces now realize that continued obstruction will deepen the crisis within the legislative institution, which pushes towards expediting the selection of a parliamentary speaker with a figure acceptable across all political blocs, in order to avoid further political deadlock.”
