MP Abbas al-Maliki affirmed on Saturday his categorical rejection of any foreign military presence inside the country after the date set for ending the mission of those forces on September 30, stressing that the issue of national sovereignty is not subject to negotiation or extension.

Al-Maliki told Al-Maalomah that “Iraq will not allow any foreign soldiers or forces to remain on its territory after September 30,” explaining that “the current stage requires completing the process of ending the foreign military presence completely and extending full sovereignty over the entire national territory.”

He added that “the security forces, in all their formations and branches, are capable of holding the ground, securing the country’s borders, and preserving its security and stability without the need for any external military umbrella,” noting that “Parliament is closely monitoring the commitment of the concerned parties to implement the withdrawal schedules without any procrastination or delay that would affect the prestige of the state.”

Earlier, informed sources confirmed the movement of a large convoy of US forces from Harir Air Base near Erbil towards southern Iraq, amid reports that it would later head to US bases in Kuwait.
