State of Law Coalition leader Nouri al-Maliki asserted on Saturday that not participating in the elections amounts to acquiescing to “evil,” while explaining that holding the elections represents a reassuring message amid regional tensions.

“Our motto is that the law is above all,” Maliki said during an election ceremony attended by Shafaq News Agency. “Our choice was not just a slogan raised on special occasions, but rather a belief. We believe that there is no state without law, and that Iraq can only rise on the basis of constitutional institutions governed by regulations without discrimination or exclusion.”

He added, “Holding the elections on schedule, given the current global and regional tensions, sends reassuring messages, reflects the democratic experience, the success of the political process, and the overcoming of many of the crises and problems that Iraq faced after the fall of the Ba’ath regime.”

He continued: “We have the courage to face the failures of state institutions, and all political forces must undertake the responsibility of addressing them, reforming them, and participating consciously in the elections.” He explained that “Iraq faced serious challenges from terrorism, corruption, and sectarian strife, but it overcame them. Today, we want to build the state, restrict the possession of weapons to the state, and strengthen the security services. Security is not the absence of violence, but rather ensuring the country’s stability.”

He pointed out that “you will recall that the House of Representatives has been subjected to, and continues to be subjected to, fierce criticism campaigns since the first parliamentary session, led by henchmen of the former regime, who issued statements prohibiting participation in the elections. They know that Parliament is the voice of the people.”

He stressed that “the lack of widespread participation in the elections represents a direct and indirect response to evil. We have the will and determination to confront corruption, and we will not compromise or compromise with corruption.”

Al-Maliki addressed the political contenders in the electoral race: “We must demonstrate the highest degree of responsibility and respect for others. Competition must not become an arena for sedition and incitement. Today, we begin a new journey of work in the path of the rule of law.”
