Independent politician Abbas Al-Maliki confirmed on Monday that there are many question marks surrounding the resignations from the Federal Court, coinciding with the imminent ruling on the Khor Abdullah dispute.

Al-Maliki told Al-Maalouma, “The resignation of the Federal Court President and some of its members coincided with the Khor Abdullah case being placed on the court’s agenda for a ruling, after the matter had been repeatedly delayed.”

He added, “The resignations, which coincided with the introduction of the aforementioned file, raise many questions, especially since the Khor case has been the subject of much debate and discussion between Iraq and Kuwait, and domestically among many political factions, with the ball now in the Federal Court’s court.”

He explained that “there are question marks and inquiries about the extent to which the Federal Court was subjected to pressure from political parties to approve the ceding of a significant portion of Khor Abdullah to Kuwait. If it wasn’t subjected to pressure, why didn’t it rule on the case, and then those members who wanted to resign resigned? Given that the issue affects Iraqi sovereignty.”

He pointed out that “if the resignations were an attempt to evade giving a national and frank opinion that would do justice to Iraq in this case, then the court will be held accountable by the Iraqi street first and foremost, since everyone expects the judiciary to stand against any attempts to undermine Iraq’s sovereignty.”
