MP Ali Al-Lami confirmed on Tuesday the existence of ambitious plans to establish three new refineries in Iraq, noting that exporting petroleum derivatives represents a priority to support the country’s treasury in the coming years.
Al-Lami said in an interview with Al-Maalouma, “There are studies underway to establish three new refineries with varying production capacities, taking into account the need to have lines capable of producing large quantities that allow the surplus to be exported abroad.” He indicated that “global demand for petroleum derivatives is constantly increasing, which provides Iraq with an important investment opportunity.”
He added that “Iraq has large production capacities in the field of crude oil, and it can be converted through the new refineries into derivatives ready for export, thus providing direct financial returns that will enhance the state treasury’s balance.”
Al-Lami indicated that “Iraq is capable of being an important regional and international window for exporting petroleum derivatives if the construction of the planned refineries proceeds in the coming years.”
