Member of the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee, Ali Saadoun, confirmed on Wednesday that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is still not complying with federal laws, noting that the region is preventing Ministry of Oil personnel from accessing oil fields within its territory.
Saadoun said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “The Ministry of Oil and the Council of Representatives do not have any accurate information about the volume of oil production in the region due to the lack of cooperation from the Kurdistan government,” stressing that “the region lives off procrastination and exploits oil smuggling for financial gain.”
He added, “The KRG has not and will not abide by federal laws, and in doing so, it is not punishing the federal government, but rather punishing the Kurdish people themselves.” He pointed out that “the central government will not pay the salaries of the region’s employees for two reasons: the first is that the region has received its full share of the budget, and the second is that it has not complied with federal law and has not disclosed its oil data.”
The Kurdistan Region’s oil fields are witnessing widespread smuggling of oil derivatives to Turkey, supported by the region’s ruling parties, with no signs of stopping. This comes at a time when the regional government continues to demand the salaries of its employees, despite the fact that no oil revenues have been transferred to the federal government.
