MP Ali Al-Lami confirmed on Wednesday that the funds previously allocated to support the imported fuel bill will be transferred to support nine key sectors after imports stopped for the first time in many years.
Al-Lami told Al-Maalouma that “the government’s decision to stop importing oil derivatives represents an important achievement in the context of reaching the stage of self-sufficiency,” noting that “the annual cost of imports ranged between 5 and 6 billion dollars, which is a huge amount of money that will now be used to support nine vital sectors in the country, including education, electricity, roads and bridges, agriculture, industry, and the rest of the other service sectors.”
Al-Lami added that “the upcoming budgets will witness a rearrangement of their items according to the new variables resulting from achieving self-sufficiency in oil derivatives,” indicating that “the development and expansion of production lines in the strategic refineries inside Iraq have contributed directly to ending the need for imports.”
He pointed out that “halting imports will save significant sums of money that can be invested in supporting vital and service sectors, which will positively impact the national economy and public services for citizens.”
