Karam al-Khazali, a member of the National Wisdom Movement, revealed that the dialogue between Shia political forces regarding the formation of the government has stalled. He emphasized that reports of a final agreement on a prime ministerial candidate are inaccurate, while also pointing to external interference exerting pressure on the Sunni political scene.
In a statement to the Information Agency, al-Khazali said, “The Shia political discussions are still in their initial stages and have not yet reached the level of genuine understandings upon which to base the selection of the next prime minister.” He explained that “much of what is being circulated in some media outlets about an agreement on specific names is merely speculation that is not based on the reality of the actual consultations.”
He added, “The Sunni political establishment is facing clear external pressures; some parties are acting on orders coming from abroad instead of adhering to a purely national decision. This is heartbreaking because it threatens the unity of the national position at a sensitive time.”
Al-Khazali indicated that “the current tensions within the various political blocs are hindering progress on the government formation process, which necessitates adjusting the political pace and giving dialogue more space to reach genuine agreements that preserve the country’s stability.”
He stressed that the coming weeks would be crucial in determining the shape of alliances, calling on all forces to prioritize the national interest and block any external interference that attempts to influence Iraqi decision-making.
