Shafaq News/ The leader of the “Sovereignty” party, Khamis Al-Khanjar, expressed his opinion on Saturday that “Iraq has not learned anything from the lesson of ISIS” and its invasion of areas and cities estimated at a third of the country in mid-2014, except as a “security threat.”
Al-Khanjar said in a speech he delivered during the opening session on the second day of the Peace and Security in the Middle East Forum held in Dohuk, “We in Iraq did not learn anything from the lesson of ISIS. On the contrary, everything that happened after the military defeat of the organization in 2017 was a consolidation of all the premises that produced Al-Qaeda and ISIS in the first place.”
He added, “Neither internationally nor in Iraq has the phenomenon of ISIS been dealt with except as a security threat, and not as a result of the state crisis in Iraq, nor as a result of the crisis of the monopoly of power, nor as a result of the absence of the concept of collective security.”
Al-Khanjar added, “Our biggest problem is the selectivity in dealing with the constitution and interpreting many of its articles. This is what happened with all the blocs that won first place in the elections. They are cursed in the Iraqi political system because of the wrong interpretation of the constitution and leaving loose ends, as happened with Iyad Allawi’s list in 2010 and Mr. Al-Sadr’s list in the last elections.”
He added, “In all democratic countries, when a political or social crisis occurs, elections are the solution, except in Iraq, we have a post-election problem that sometimes reaches the point of armed conflict.”
