Former Parliament Rapporteur Mohammed Othman Al-Khalidi confirmed on Saturday that Iraq has effectively entered the list of countries that have reached the stage of self-sufficiency in oil derivatives, while pointing out that the import bill for these products used to reach 6 trillion dinars annually.

Al-Khalidi told Al-Maalouma, “Reading the indicators in the oil sector shows that Iraq has actually reached the stage of self-sufficiency in oil derivatives, especially gasoline, despite the talk about a crisis during the past few days.”

He added that “communication with the Ministry of Oil and the Oil Products Company confirmed that what is being promoted about the existence of a crisis is exaggerated, and that there are parties trying to create a crisis for multiple purposes, but the reality confirms that there is no shortage, with large quantities available and a good reserve.”

He pointed out that “Iraq’s achievement of self-sufficiency will lead to a reduction in the oil derivatives import bill, which used to reach 6 trillion dinars annually. These are huge sums that will be directed towards 12 important sectors, most notably health, education, roads and water.”

Al-Khalidi pointed out that “this is an important step in strengthening Iraq’s economy and alleviating the burden of the import bill in hard currency, which will positively impact the flexibility in providing basic services.”
