Member of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, Mustafa Al-Karaawi, confirmed on Tuesday that the delay in disbursing salaries to employees, retirees, and even social welfare benefits is the result of a real liquidity crisis due to the deficit in the state’s general budget.
Al-Karaawi indicated in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency that “the expansion in spending while not achieving the planned revenues, especially non-oil, led to a liquidity shortage,” explaining that “the data and indicators show an increase in the volume of actual spending compared to the revenues achieved in 2024.”
He pointed out that “the government had committed to achieving 20% of public revenues through non-oil sources, but failed to achieve this goal,” which increased pressure on the budget. He stressed that “this shortcoming means a real problem in public revenues, while there is a continuous expansion in spending.”
Al-Karaawi called on the government to “be clear with public opinion and acknowledge the existence of a financial and economic crisis that needs to be quickly addressed,” warning that “the delay in disbursing salaries may become normal if these imbalances continue.”
