Information / Report..
Former Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi returned to the country amid tense political circumstances and ahead of the upcoming elections, which raised many questions about the timing and objectives of this return.
This step comes at a time when the political scene is witnessing an escalation in tensions, as observers believe that it may be an attempt to confuse the political situation and send messages of doubt and mistrust to the masses.
Despite his lack of any political or popular weight, Al-Kadhimi faces severe criticism due to his term in office, as he is accused of exploiting his position to achieve financial gains. These accusations have worsened after the revelation of the involvement of some of his close associates in the theft of the century scandal, which is one of the largest corruption cases in Iraq’s history, which cast doubt on his integrity and political performance.
As the elections approach, questions are increasing about the motives behind his return, as some believe that the move may aim to exploit the current circumstances to his advantage despite the absence of a popular base supporting him. There are also fears that his return may be an attempt to undermine the electoral process and raise doubts about the government’s ability to manage the next stage.
In this context, MP Mukhtar al-Moussawi told Al-Maalouma Agency, “Former Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi does not have any political or popular weight, and does not represent anything in the political scene, and does not have any balance other than the money he seized from the state.”
He added that “al-Kadhimi and those with him, including Raed Juhi and his brothers, exploited their time in power to achieve financial gains and steal state funds, before leaving the country.”
Al-Moussawi also stressed that “the government should have arrested al-Kadhimi immediately upon his entry into Iraq, especially since there are legal procedures issued against him,” considering that “the failure to take any action against him reflects the weakness of the current government and its inability to confront corruption files.”
In parallel, calls continue from several political circles for the necessity of taking legal action against al-Kadhimi, especially with regard to the accusations directed at him and members of his close circle, as many believe that his failure to be held accountable so far reflects the government’s laxity in dealing with major corruption cases.
In sum, Al-Kadhimi’s return to Iraq reflects a complex political scene, where corruption files overlap with election preparations.
As pressure mounts to hold him accountable, the most prominent question remains: Will he be prosecuted or will his return add further complexity to the Iraqi political scene?
