Oil expert Hamza Al-Jawahiri stressed on Sunday that the next phase in Iraq requires working to increase oil production capacity, in line with economic development plans and the growing demand for energy sources, both domestically and internationally.
Al-Jawahiri told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “Iraq continues its full commitment to OPEC decisions related to reducing exports and controlling production levels.”
He added, “This commitment does not mean restricting the country’s production capacities or halting their development. On the contrary, these capacities must be strengthened to ensure Iraq’s readiness for any changes in global energy markets.”
In another aspect, Al-Jawahiri stressed “the importance of diversifying energy sources and not relying excessively on crude oil alone, explaining that investing in natural gas, especially the gas associated with oil extraction, represents a strategic priority.”
He added that “maximizing the use of gas will contribute to providing sufficient fuel to operate power plants and reduce imports, in addition to reducing waste resulting from gas flaring.”
Iraq faces increasing challenges in the energy sector, as the electricity crisis and reliance on imported fuel continue to burden the national economy. This makes increasing production capacity and expanding investment in gas an essential option to enhance energy security and achieve economic stability.
