Oil expert Hamza al-Jawahiri confirmed on Tuesday that the decision to supply the United States with 500,000 barrels of Iraqi crude oil remains unclear regarding its details and the corresponding returns.
Al-Jawahiri told the Information Agency that “the decision to supply the United States with 500,000 barrels of Iraqi crude oil was made to support its strategic reserves,” explaining that “it is natural that there would be something in return for this action, but the nature of this return has not yet been clarified.”
He added that “there is information circulating indicating that the return may be through the implementation of projects within Iraq or the acquisition of certain goods, without any officially announced details.”
He pointed out that “this matter requires governmental clarifications regarding the nature of the agreement and its economic effects on Iraq.”
Prime Minister Ali Abdullah Saleh had previously announced a plan to allocate approximately 500,000 barrels per day of Iraqi oil to contribute to replenishing the US strategic petroleum reserve, which sparked political and parliamentary debate regarding the details of the agreement and the economic returns for Iraq.
