MP Yasser Al-Husseini confirmed on Tuesday that hopes are pinned on the Federal Court’s impartiality and the strength of its national stance on the Khor Abdullah issue, stressing that the decision expected in the next two days will be decisive and pivotal in preserving Iraqi sovereignty and interests.
Al-Husseini said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency that “great pressure is being exerted on the Federal Court, which has led to the resignation of a number of its members,” warning against “attempts to influence its decision regarding the invalidity of the Khor Abdullah agreement.”
He added, “We reject attempts to relinquish the rights and interests of Iraqis under any pretext, and we denounce attempts to politicize the judicial decision and regional or international alignment against the national interest.” He pointed out that “the appeal filed by the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister against the court’s decision is surprising and unjustified.”
He accused the current government of “exploiting its influence and stalling in submitting the Federal Court’s decision to international organizations, which has allowed the Kuwaiti side to build offshore platforms within Iraqi waters and document them internationally, taking advantage of official Iraqi laxity.”
Al-Husseini concluded his statement by emphasizing “full support for the Federal Court and its national decisions, and rejecting all forms of external pressure and influence, in order to preserve Iraqi sovereignty and its maritime rights.”
It is worth noting that the Khor Abdullah issue is one of the most thorny sovereign issues, and it prompted the Presidency of the Republic and the Prime Minister to file an appeal against the previous Federal Court ruling, which invalidated the agreement with Kuwait regarding this waterway.
