Amal al-Din al-Har, a member of the Coordination Framework, warned on Monday of a plot led by Gulf entities to destabilize the political process in Iraq by purchasing voter IDs and supporting the rise of corrupt Sunni figures to positions of power, with the aim of advancing foreign agendas at the expense of the people’s interests.
Al-Har told Al-Maalouma News Agency, “We have received confirmed information about attempts to purchase voter cards for exorbitant sums, and the exploitation of corruption to bring suspicious figures into decision-making positions.” He warned that “such steps aim to overturn the election results and interfere with the will of the Iraqi people.”
He added, “These operations pose a direct threat to the country’s sovereignty and political independence. Immediate action is required by oversight and judicial authorities to prevent the politicization of the electoral process and cut off funding for any foreign attempts to buy influence.”
These warnings indicate that some Gulf states continue to treat Iraq as an arena for regional influence and conflict, and are seeking to use political capital to advance their influence within the democratic process.
