The head of the National State Forces Alliance, Ammar al-Hakim, discussed on Sunday with the acting US ambassador to Baghdad, Steven Feiglin, the latest political developments in Iraq and the region and ways to develop bilateral relations between the two countries.
During the meeting, Al-Hakim reiterated his call to address the problem of weapons outside the framework of the state, explaining the importance of dealing with this issue from the perspective of the Iraqi national interest, according to Iraqi mechanisms and timelines, stressing that addressing this problem is a constitutional entitlement and a national interest, and appreciating all the efforts that contributed to liberating the land and restoring the state.
Regarding the economic situation in Iraq, the head of the National State Forces Alliance stressed the importance of diversifying the economy and diversifying the outlets for exporting Iraqi oil, with the importance of increasing production in line with Iraq’s wealth, population, and the damage it has suffered as a result of regional events and the fight against terrorism, calling for an end to the escalation in the region and replacing it with dialogue and understanding, and striving to restore stability and calm.
The issue of armed factions is one of the most sensitive issues facing the Iraqi government, with the approach of September 30, which the main political forces have set as the deadline for restricting weapons to official institutions.
The State Administration Coalition, which includes the most prominent Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish political forces, stressed during its meeting on August 5 the need to restrict weapons to the state, and considered the parties that carry out activities that threaten the security of the country outside the framework of official institutions as “outlaws and must be fought.”
The coalition warned that any armed activity outside the framework of the state after September 30 would be dealt with according to the anti-terrorism law.
The September 30th date also coincides with the deadlines related to ending the international coalition’s military presence in Iraq, which some factions use as a basis for linking the future of their weapons to the withdrawal of foreign forces.
