Information/Baghdad:
MP Zuhair al-Fatlawi warned on Thursday of a stifling crisis threatening water security in Iraq, stressing that strategic water reserves have declined to an unprecedented level during the current season.
Al-Fatlawi told Al-Maalouma, “The strategic water reserve has decreased to approximately 9 billion cubic meters, while it was expected to reach 18 billion cubic meters by the beginning of summer. This means that the current quantity is approximately half of what was expected.”
He added, “Last year’s storage amounted to nearly 20 billion cubic meters distributed between the Hamrin, Mosul, and Haditha basins, while releases from the Turkish side are estimated at 60 cubic meters per second. Currently, between 300 and 400 cubic meters per second are being released from the strategic storage into the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.”
He explained that “Iraq’s water reserves, in all their surface and groundwater forms, have reached their lowest level in more than 80 years,” calling on the relevant authorities to “take urgent measures to ensure the country’s water security during the coming seasons.”
