MP Zuhair al-Fatlawi confirmed on Saturday that Iraq is facing an unprecedented debt burden exceeding $130 billion. He warned of the repercussions of the escalating financial crisis and called for public frankness about the nature and dimensions of the crisis.
Al-Fatlawi told Al-Maalouma News Agency, “The country’s financial situation has become extremely difficult, and the accumulated deficit constitutes a real crisis that cannot be overcome through silence or traditional solutions. This requires clear frankness with public opinion and engaging them in understanding the magnitude of the current challenges.”
He added, “The high debt and increasing operating expenses, coupled with limited revenues, especially with declining oil revenues, put the country on the brink of a dangerous economic turning point, the repercussions of which could worsen in the near future.”
Al-Fatlawi emphasized that “exiting the crisis requires a realistic roadmap based on flexible and transparent measures that avoid temporary solutions. It is also essential not to conceal the facts from citizens, as high debt has become a growing source of public and economic concern.”
It is noteworthy that parliamentary and economic circles have warned in recent weeks of the danger of the escalating financial deficit, in light of the absence of strategic solutions and the decline in resources, which portends a financial crisis that may worsen if urgent action is not taken to find effective solutions.
