Member of the United Anbar Alliance, Muhammad al-Fahdawi, confirmed on Sunday that there is a clear rejection from influential political parties towards the candidacy of Muhammad al-Halbousi for the presidency of the House of Representatives in the current session, even if he has the support of the Sunni bloc.
Al-Fahdawi told Al-Maalomah that “the Kurdish component and a number of winning parties in the Kurdistan Region are placing a clear veto on Al-Halbousi assuming the presidency of Parliament again,” noting that “these forces reject Al-Halbousi continuing to head the legislative authority.”
He added that “the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, discussed this issue during his recent meeting with the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani, where both sides stressed their rejection of al-Halbousi’s nomination for the position.”
Al-Fahdawi explained that “the Sunni component’s consensus alone is not enough to impose a candidate on the other components,” stressing that “Al-Halbousi’s chances in the current session appear very weak in light of this multifaceted political rejection.”
