On Monday, Mohammed al-Dulaimi, a member of the United Anbar Alliance, accused the former Kuwaiti government of exploiting all its resources, along with foreign support, to influence the maritime border demarcation agreement with Iraq.
Al-Dulaimi told Al-Maalouma News Agency, “In 2012, the Kuwaiti government, under the leadership of its former emir, Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, used its resources and capabilities to alter the course of the maritime border demarcation agreement and attempt to impose the division of the Khor Abdullah corridor, which is considered a sovereign corridor for Iraq and is not subject to negotiation or division under any circumstances.”
He added, “The Kuwaiti side offered huge sums of money as bribes to former Iraqi officials, with the support of international bodies, to facilitate the passage of the agreement under which part of Khor Abdullah was ceded to Kuwait. This later prompted the Federal Supreme Court to annul the agreement, deeming it illegitimate and unconstitutional.”
He pointed out that “any attempt to relinquish Khor Abdullah would be a direct threat to the Iraqi economy, something some external parties are seeking to achieve by pressuring the imposition of unfair agreements against Iraq and its territorial waters.”
