The Secretary-General of the Iraqi National Project, Jamal al-Dhari, called on Wednesday for a unified and firm Arab and Islamic stance towards the Houthi group, in light of the targeting of Mecca.
Al-Dhari said in a Facebook post, which was reviewed by Shafaq News Agency, that “targeting Mecca, the Qibla of Muslims, is a dangerous escalation that violates the sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques and threatens the security of pilgrims to the Sacred House of God, and requires a unified and firm Arab and Islamic stance towards the Houthi militias and those who support them.”
He added that “the least that is expected from the Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and all Arab and Islamic countries that host offices or representatives of the Houthis is to take legal measures to close them and end their presence on their territories, and to reject any cover or leniency with this group classified as terrorist.”
Al-Dhari pointed out that “any attack on the Two Holy Mosques is a serious transgression that cannot be tolerated, and that protecting the holy sites and the safety of those who visit them is a responsibility that does not accept compromise or leniency.”
A military source affiliated with the Houthi group denied on Wednesday morning the existence of any threat from Yemen targeting the city of Mecca or Islamic holy sites, accusing Saudi Arabia of promoting what he described as false news with the aim of distorting and swaying Islamic public opinion.
The Joint Forces Command of the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen announced on Wednesday morning that the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces intercepted and destroyed a drone that attempted to enter the airspace of the holy capital, Mecca, noting that this was the second attempt to target Mecca after its first attempt to launch a ballistic missile on July 27, 2017.
