Former MP Mohammed Al-Bayati ruled out on Tuesday the possibility of the next government resorting to changing the exchange rate of the dollar in Iraqi markets in order to contain the financial gap and increase revenues.
Al-Bayati told Al-Maalouma that “Iraq is actually suffering from a financial crisis related to liquidity, the features of which have begun to appear clearly during the past months, and it is a real crisis that no one disagrees on,” indicating that “addressing this problem requires setting a clear roadmap that the next government will adopt to enhance the revenues of the state treasury.”
He added that “the solutions do not lie in raising the dollar exchange rate, because the repercussions of such a decision will be difficult for local markets, and will lead to a direct increase in the prices of materials, which will increase the suffering of citizens,” stressing that “resorting to this option is not on the table in the next stage.”
Al-Bayati pointed out that “oil prices are still fluctuating and witnessing a decline day after day, which necessitates the government activating non-oil sectors and maximizing alternative revenues,” stressing that “non-oil revenues can constitute an important percentage of the state treasury if they are invested correctly.”
He concluded by saying that “the success of the next government hinges on its ability to diversify sources of income and avoid decisions that negatively impact the living conditions of citizens.”
