Political analyst Sabah Al-Akeili ruled out, on Thursday, that US President-elect Donald Trump would proceed with the Baghdad-Washington agreement on ending the US military presence on Iraqi soil, noting that Trump has improvised decisions that may postpone the implementation of what Baghdad and Washington agreed upon.
Al-Akeili told Al-Maalouma, “Trump was against withdrawing his forces from Iraq and ending the missions of the international coalition on Iraqi soil, but there is an agreement between the Biden administration and the Iraqi government to end the presence of its forces in the country at the end of this year.”
He added, “Trump is a controversial figure and his decisions cannot be relied upon, especially since this figure makes improvised decisions, and therefore it is not possible to predict Trump’s actions and the decisions he takes while in power.”
He pointed out that “all indications give the impression that Trump may amend the agreement between Baghdad and Washington regarding the military withdrawal from Iraq, meaning that the agreement may be postponed until the situation in the Middle East stabilizes.”
