Shipping data and media reports on Saturday showed movements of ships and oil tankers toward the Strait of Hormuz, ahead of the start of negotiations between the United States and Iran in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
CNN reported that “a number of ships began heading towards the Strait of Hormuz as talks began, amid cautious monitoring by international parties.”
In the same context, Bloomberg quoted shipping data as saying that “two Chinese oil tankers and a Greek ship are currently moving through the strait.”
These moves come amid a tense regional atmosphere as the outcome of the negotiations taking place in Islamabad is awaited. These negotiations include several issues, most notably Tehran’s condition that the talks begin with American pledges that include a ceasefire in Lebanon and the lifting of sanctions imposed on it.
Iran is also demanding the lifting of asset freezes and the end of economic restrictions, along with recognition of its interests in the Strait of Hormuz, permission to enrich uranium, and the rejection of any restrictions on its missile program.
In contrast, Washington insists on linking any easing of sanctions to concessions from Tehran regarding its nuclear and missile program, and refuses to grant it special powers in the Strait of Hormuz.
Both America and Israel are demanding restrictions on Iran’s missile capabilities, while disagreement continues over the terms of the withdrawal of US forces from the region and guarantees of non-escalation.
