The head of the Kurdistan region, Massoud Barzani, the former Iraqi Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki, the responsibility of the situation in Iraq, adding that “he who dedicated sectarianism, monopoly of power, destroyed the relationship between Baghdad and Erbil.”
“The truth is that Nuri al-Maliki is the reason behind what came to Iraq today, is the one who dedicated sectarianism, monopolized power, destroyed the relationship between Baghdad and Erbil, violated the Iraqi constitution,” Barzani said in an interview with the newspaper Okaz Saudi Arabia and viewed by Sky Press. “This is the reason for my clash with Nuri al-Maliki, because there are no personal issues.”
On whether Maliki plays a role in many of the decisions being made in Iraq, Barzani said: “True Maliki still has an impact on the government in Baghdad in return there are attempts to reduce his influence”
He said that “Haider Abadi does not compare to Maliki, he is a man can be understood with him, but certainly there is opposition and obstruction of my slaves, and indeed there are many obstacles to Abadi.”
It is noteworthy that the relations between Erbil and Baghdad have seen great tension since 2014, when Maliki took control of Iraq, especially after the federal government cut the share of the Kurdistan region of the budget, and the situation between the two sides, forcing the region to determine the date of September 25 date for the referendum in preparation for independence.
