US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Democratic Muslim congresswomen Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan should be “put in a mental institution” and sent back to their countries of origin, for engaging in a heated argument with him during his State of the Union address.
Tlaib, who is a Palestinian-American, and Omar, who is a Somali-American, criticized Trump during his speech last Tuesday when he praised his administration’s tough campaign against immigration and its enforcement of immigration laws.
Omar and Tlaib shouted “You are killing Americans” at Trump during the speech, with Omar also calling him a “liar”.
Trump said in a post on Truth Social, “The two congresswomen had bloodshot, bulging eyes like lunatics. They are demented, deranged, and mentally ill. Frankly, it looks like they should be committed to a mental institution.”
He added: “We must return them to where they came from, as quickly as possible, and both are American citizens.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries described the tone of Trump’s remarks against Tlaib and Omar as “xenophobic and shameful.”
Tlaib said on X, “Trump’s statements show that he is in a state of collapse.”
During his speech last Tuesday, Trump repeated his accusation that people of Somali origin in the United States engage in fraud and claimed that “Somali cyber hackers looted Minnesota.”
His administration is using fraud allegations to deploy armed federal immigration agents in Minnesota, and Trump portrays his actions as aimed at “combating fraud and improving homeland security.”
Human rights groups say the campaign has created an environment of fear and that Trump has used individual cases of fraud as a pretext to target immigrants.
These groups dismiss Trump’s ability to combat fraud, citing his decisions to pardon those who faced fraud convictions in the past.
Trump recently faced criticism after one of his social media accounts posted a video depicting former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama in a racist manner.
