Mark Savaya, President Donald Trump’s envoy to Iraq, stressed on Thursday the importance of eliminating “armed groups” from Iraq, indicating that America supports a strong Kurdistan within a unified and stable Iraq.
Savaya said in a post on the X website, which was followed by Shafaq News Agency, that “armed groups operating illegally and moving with hostile foreign agendas carried out an attack yesterday on the Kormor gas field.”
Savaya continued: “The Iraqi government must identify those responsible for this attack and bring them to justice. Let it be clear that there is no place for such armed groups in a fully sovereign Iraq.”
He noted that “the United States will fully support these efforts. Every illegal armed group and every supporter of it will be tracked down, confronted, and held accountable.”
He stated that “the United States supports a strong Kurdistan within a unified and stable Iraq. We encourage Baghdad and Erbil to deepen their security cooperation and work closely to protect vital economic and energy infrastructure.”
He explained that “the United States reaffirms its unwavering commitment to assisting the Government of Iraq in strengthening its defense capabilities and building its national forces. Together, we will continue to protect Iraq’s resources, defend its sovereignty, and ensure the security and well-being of all its citizens.”
Last night, the Kormor gas field in the Chamchamal district was attacked by “drones,” which led to a fire breaking out in one of the fields, without any human casualties, while the field suffered material damage, according to security sources.
The incident resulted in a halt to gas supplies to power generation plants, according to the Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity in the Kurdistan Region.
The attack comes days after unidentified drones approached the area, triggering an alert within the field, while technical and investigative teams are currently on site to monitor the situation and restore it to normal.
Earlier this morning, the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, strongly condemned the terrorist attack that targeted the Kormor gas field.
President Nechirvan Barzani said in a statement today that “this attack targets the economic infrastructure and public services in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and poses a direct threat to the security and stability of the country.”
He stressed that “it is the duty and responsibility of the Iraqi federal government and the relevant security institutions to make serious efforts as soon as possible and to take the necessary and effective measures to investigate this crime, punish its perpetrators, and prevent its recurrence.”
Earlier today, caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani described the attack on the Kormor gas field as “an attack on all of Iraq.”
This came during a phone call he made with the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, according to what was announced in a statement by the regional government.
