Shafaq News/ A local source in Kirkuk Governorate reported on Wednesday that special forces stormed deep into Wadi al-Shai, south of the governorate, after finding a “treasure trove” of information about ISIS.
The source told Shafaq News Agency, “Special forces from the Iraqi elite stormed deep into Wadi al-Shai, within the borders of Daquq district (50 km south of Kirkuk), and the military operation comes after killing seven ISIS terrorists, where what was described as a treasure trove of information about the organization was found.”
The source added that “the operation is still ongoing with Iraqi air cover and drones, and aims to eliminate ISIS hideouts and any terrorist activity,” indicating that “the information base was provided by military intelligence in coordination with other security agencies.”
The Shay Valley, which is a waterway, extends from the Rashad side to the Hamrin Mountains, from where it connects via a large valley towards the Daquq district, south of Kirkuk.
However, its majority area is located within the Al-Rashad district, which is adjacent to the Al-Fathah area from the Riyadh district, and extends within the Hamrin Mountains range, which is the natural dividing line between Kirkuk and Salah al-Din Governorate.
This valley was known as the “Valley of Death” due to the activity of terrorist groups there, and some other groups, during the American presence, such as the so-called “Ansar al-Sunnah and Naqshbandi” and then Al-Qaeda.
The valley is characterised by the presence of large water sites, as well as valleys, grasses, reeds and mountain ranges connected to the Hamrin Mountains. These are rugged areas that terrorist groups can exploit for hiding and as sites for their elements to settle.
The extremist organization exploits the ruggedness of the area and the depth of the valley to avoid detection by the security forces, so Iraqi F-16 aircraft bomb the organization’s hideouts from time to time.
One of the important strongholds of ISIS is the Zarqa Valley, which connects the districts of Daquq and Tuz Khurmatu, and extends to the Al-Azim area to form a water area that connects the three governorates of Kirkuk, Salah al-Din and Diyala. It is a rugged area with tall forests and trees that are difficult to reach, except by air force aircraft that monitor and target the organization’s elements.
