Shafaq News – Kirkuk / Nineveh
A source at the North Oil Company in Kirkuk province revealed on Friday that the company’s crude oil production had increased by 50,000 barrels per day.
Oil production reached 375,000 barrels per day, compared to 325,000 barrels per day in the previous period, following a series of development and maintenance operations carried out by the company’s technical and engineering staff, according to the source.
The same source explained to Shafaq News Agency that the achieved increase was the result of well-studied production plans that included the Jambur, Baba Gurgur, Khabaza, and Bai Hassan fields, in addition to well reclamation efforts in the Batma field, affiliated with the Nineveh Oil Fields Authority. This has had a positive impact on the volume of supplies allocated to local refineries and oil exports.
Reclamation of Batma wells in Nineveh
According to an official statement issued by the North Oil Company, the well reclamation work in the Batma field is in line with the government’s program to increase production capacity.
The field operations were carried out by the Director of the Nineveh Oil Fields Authority, Naqtal Yousef Ibrahim, in cooperation with the company’s Drilling Department and the staff of the Basra Oil Company/Production Department.
The operations included a field trial by installing an electric submersible pump (ESP) in the Batma (6) well, with initial test results showing a production rate of 750 barrels per day. After the test was completed, the pump was withdrawn and installed in the Batma (11) well to evaluate its production, while similar work will begin in the Batma (9) well in the coming days.
Contracting with the British company “BP”
In a related context, oil expert Ihsan Al-Ali revealed in a statement to Shafaq News Agency that the Iraqi Ministry of Oil recently concluded a technical and advisory cooperation agreement with the British company BP, with the aim of developing the northern oil fields and increasing production efficiency.
He pointed out that BP will provide advanced geological and technical studies using the latest seismic surveying and digital analysis technologies, in addition to developing long-term investment plans aimed at increasing production capacity to levels that may exceed 400,000 barrels per day over the next three years.
Al-Ali added that this partnership comes at a time when Iraq is seeking to diversify its sources of technical support and enhance the efficiency of older fields, especially in light of the challenges posed by declining natural production rates due to the aging of oil reservoirs.
Economic and political impact
The oil expert emphasized that the recent increase in northern oil production, coupled with cooperation with BP, will contribute to boosting Iraq’s financial revenues and supporting the general budget, especially as global oil prices continue to fluctuate at levels that provide a healthy profit margin for Iraq.
He pointed out that these steps also carry political and strategic dimensions, as developing the northern oil fields contributes to achieving a balance in national production between the southern and northern fields and supports negotiations with the Kurdistan Region regarding oil exports, especially with the imminent resumption of exports from the region after a halt that lasted for more than a year.
Al-Ali continued by saying that, through these efforts, Iraq seeks to strengthen its position in the global energy market and increase its reliance on modern technologies and international partnerships, ensuring sustainable production and improving the quality of oil produced.
The oil expert concluded his remarks by saying, “If this pace of work and cooperation continues, the coming years could witness qualitative leaps in northern oil production, with clear economic gains that will benefit national development.”
