Representative Sarwa Abdul Wahid accused the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) authorities on Monday of carrying out organized oil and gold smuggling operations, stressing that these practices have contributed to distorting Iraq’s image in the eyes of the international community.
Abdul Wahid told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the ruling authority in the Kurdistan Region is practicing roles no different from organized gangs, by smuggling Iraqi oil and selling it outside the legal framework, without consulting the federal government or submitting to its oversight.”
She added that “smuggling operations are not limited to oil only, but also include gold and other resources, in light of the lack of transparency and accountability within the region,” noting that “these illegal practices have greatly damaged Iraq’s reputation internationally and given a negative impression of its ability to manage its resources and economic sovereignty.”
Abdul Wahid stressed that “the continuation of these violations requires a firm stance from the federal government and regulatory authorities to put an end to smuggling operations and hold the parties involved accountable to preserve the country’s wealth and the prestige of the state.”
In recent months, accusations against the regional government regarding oil smuggling outside constitutional frameworks have escalated, amid parliamentary demands for a comprehensive investigation and the exposure of local and international entities involved in these cases that threaten the national economy.
