Politician and former minister Wael Abdul Latif considered on Wednesday that the Gulf Cooperation Council’s statement demanding that Iraq recognize the Khor Abdullah Agreement, which was annulled by the Federal Court, is a blatant interference and belittling of the Iraqi government and people. He called on the government to respond immediately and urgently to this statement, warning that the people, especially the people of Basra, will respond if
the government does not do so. Abdul Latif said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency that “the statement issued by the Gulf Cooperation Council regarding maintaining the border demarcation agreement with Kuwait in Khor Abdullah is a blatant and impudent interference in Iraq’s internal affairs. The government must respond immediately today, not tomorrow, to this statement that belittles the will of the Iraqi people to preserve their navigational rights in the Gulf.”
Abdul Latif added that “if the government does not respond to this statement immediately and urgently, the Iraqi people, especially the people of Basra, will respond.”
He pointed out that “the threat contained in the statement not to attend the Baghdad summit is normal and not regrettable, because Iraq’s interests and security are more important than holding the summit.”
Abdul Latif explained, “If Khor Abdullah is truly part of Kuwait, as they claim, why did they pay $8 billion in bribes to Iraqi officials?” He confirmed that there is currently significant pressure on the Federal Court from the President and the Prime Minister to force it to reverse its previous decision to reject the Khor Abdullah agreement.
The Gulf Ministerial Council had issued a statement demanding that Iraq abide by the agreement demarcating the maritime border between Iraq and Kuwait, which the Federal Court had annulled.
